I remember being very disappointed about this because these weapons were so iconic in Doom. The lack of shotgun reload animations is bad. I made a thread about this recently and it ends up that this kind of design is indeed dead: The map design is also great and it's probably the last game of this school of design where the levels must be solved and it's not only about killing enemies until you reach the end. The architecture detail is great and there are even huge moving parts and mechanisms, when the original Doom games only had elevators and doors as moving elements (and the crusher in Doom 2). The levels are some of the most complex and impressive looking you can get with the Doom engine.

Now, the N64 game isn't really a port since it has new levels, but it does look even better than the PC original IMO (technically).

Even the PS1 port isn't as great as many people claim it to be, it's just happens to be one of the better ports compared to other consoles. I remember all consoles struggling to do a good enough port but every single one was behind the PC original.

How ironic that both Turok and Goldeneye have aged terribly according to most people, yet Doom 64 is praised in many retro gaming forums today.Īside from the somewhat ugly monster redesigns, the game runs super smoothly and looks much better than any other Doom console port. And the N64 magazine also gave it a 'mediocre' 70 something saying that it's a decent old school game but way behind the true next generation Turok and Goldeneye. I remember this game getting mediocre reviews in magazines back then, like the CVG magazine who only gave it a small paragraph crappy review, bashing it because it lacks the reload animations in shotguns. I was doing a Doom ports marathon (i own every port except 3DO and Saturn) and ended up being really impressed with Doom 64, despite already played it to death in 1997.
